In Turner’s Wake: Contemporary Visions by Jake Wood-Evans

Chatham Historic Dockyard

This exhibition explores the legacy of Britain’s most celebrated ‘painter of light’ through an exciting creative response by Wood-Evans, whose own contemporary oil paintings are presented in dialogue with Turner’s historic influence. A number of Turner loans include his Medway sketchbook and the second oil study for his Battle of Trafalgar, shown with large-scale and preparatory work by Wood-Evans who also conceives his paintings as ‘prisms of light’. The visit will also include a brief tour of the Historic Dockyard (where both HMS Victory and Temeraire were built), led by Pieter van der Merwe, who was involved in preparatory work for its establishment after the Navy left in 1983.
